                                         About the ECS

ECS faces myriads of the challenges as it seeks to serve the communities in South Sudan in collaboration with local CBOs, national and international NGOs which are operating in the area , since the signing of comprehensive Peace Agreement  in 2005, we have labored to restore hope , confidence and dignity and to be part of the reconciliation processes  .

There are also  challenges of poverty , hunger, diseases, illiteracy, ethnic conflicts and corruption. To be effective , our relationship with grass root communities, local Organs must remain vibrant , as we continue to discern our roles of supporting them .Despite the many challenges, both political and economical, we have continued   to look up to God for His protection and the provision of the most needed resources; both human and economic resources, indeed since 1995 , when Diocese of Cueibet created during the war , the desire of our organization has been  to see South Sudan transformed into a country where Christ is honoured in every aspect.

   Over the years , ECS has built an enviable relationship with the local CBOs , grass root communities in South Sudan and Cueibet Diocese in particular and has gained skills and experience in training to social development ,Education and capacity building. Evidently, ECS has played a major role already in rebuild the nation through its various programmes.

   Under God , our aim is build on the successes we have had and   therefore one of the purpose of the  ECS and Her Dioceses including  Cueibet in the  Provincial synod 2011 in Juba is to rekindle our historical relationship with the  Institutional department , Local and national NGOs  and to see how we might continue to work collaboratively in the achieving our shared vision and mission to  disciple  the nation of South Sudan and Lakes state in particular ..

        It emerged that the current political  development in the country and the role of the Church are matters of pressing concerns. In view of mixed messages on the status of the referendum , the need for prayer is urgent and it is irreplaceable both for the remaining period leading to the independent .

 

                            Origin of Cueibet Diocese

Diocese of Cueibet was created in 1995 out of Rumbek Diocese as a result of rapid growth of the ECS Church in South  Sudan that led to the ECS Province to create more Dioceses for better services and easy management of the Church.

Diocese of Cueibet is composes of three ethnic groups, (Pakam in North East of Cueibet Diocese which is north of Rumbek Diocese, and Gok in central of the Diocese which is west of Rumbek Diocese and Jur-beli in South east of Cueibet Diocese which is south of Rumbek Diocese, that make the map of the Diocese looks cave, this made Rumbek to be the Cross-road by Air or by land to go to each of these three areas  of Cueibet Diocese

 

 

b) Population

This is the population in general according to the result census of 2009 and the Christians populations in particular are the recent records of the last synod held in November

c) Situation

When Diocese was created in 1995 these areas were Payams under Rumbek County and before C.P.A. sign, they were promoted into counties.

These three areas are marginalize  areas  politically, educationally and developmentally until the word of God came to the area and spread into the last corner of these areas during the war , beginning from 1990—1995 and these three areas were covered by the word of God and Church started to introduce random education and informal classes were started as an adult literacy in the cattle-camp, Bushes  and villages and this is  where ECS Province was able to encourage the believers by creating a Dioceses including Diocese of Cueibet.

And the first Bishop of Cueibet was Concreted in 1995 and enthroned in the year 1996 outside the main road from Rumbek to Wau Because of insecurity of war between North and South  which had become now the south Sudan. But in 2004 this Diocesan Hqrs was destroyed by youth because of ethnic conflict fighting but when the peace was sign in 2005 we moved to the town Cueibet in the main road to Wau from Rumbek, which was not a town because it was demolished in 1985 by Government soldiers and we started fresh in the plat ground .

 

 During the War  between North and South , Pakam community were living together with Gok communities in Gok area when they  were displaced by Nuer in 1992 cattle-raiding  until 2004 , before the CPA  was sign,  this is when the conflict  between Gok and Pakam started  between them, it was about 12 years  Gok and Pakam were living  together peacefully under Church  and managing their local conflicts and disputes peacefully and there was a constructive social relation   that led to the high intermarriage between them .

 Church is a peace maker or it can initiate the peace,  reconcile and promote it and there are many examples done by the church, like  Wut-lit  peace initiative which is the famous one

           5-Positioning

Diocese of Cueibet is an international Episcopalian denomination , accepting the final authority of the Bible , with following characteristics : a para-Organization  church,   working in collaboration with NGOs  and as such , an autonomous in status  and international focus .

 

6-Focus

ECS is focus on Sudan and  Cueibet Diocese is focus in Rumbek North , Cueibet area and Wulu of Jur-belli, aims  at investing in  people , has discipleship as a focus in all her work, and aims at the building  the faithful community , being the body of the church.

 

7-Character

ECS is a blend of national  and international volunteer staffs  all parts of the same body of church of Christ.

 

8-Approach

ECS Diocese of Cueibet is strive to have a holistic  and integrated approach in its programmees, targeting Christ-centered  transformation , so ECS Diocese of Cueibet  seek to empower and equip individual communities  through the following  Key areas  of Her commitment  and direction  for the future therefore  is to holistic ministry , deliberately seeking to  address spiritual, social, mental and physical transformation in the lives of  individuals and communities .

 

9-Intervention

Our cordial relationship with the  Community  is critical because the local church has invaluable knowledge and understanding , and it represents the people who are in need as well as those who are offering help. In this context , neither  partner is utilized or perceived as a means , but we both are relevant agents of transformation  based on our different and complementary strengths , and ECS Diocese of Cueibet Development wing uses a number of approaches for her intervention  to fulfill the Diocesan Mission  :-

 

       1-       Church and Discipleships

(Strengthen theological education , sustainability and infrastructure development.)

Developing people’s skills through participatory models, Bible teaching , theological training.

The purpose of the church is to building the people through these process :-

1-       Warmer the  Church through Fellowship

2-      Deeper the church through Discipleship

3-      Stronger the church  through  Worship

4-      Broader the church through Ministry

5-      Larger the church through Evangelism

 

           2-Education programmees .

Helping to train the new cadre of primary teachers so essential to enabling  the youth and in building the nation.

            3--Health 

Training community health care workers,  and assisting the church and communities as they respond to the challenge of health issues, among them, the HIV and AIDS.

 

                4-Water and sanitation

Lakes state is  a rainfall state starting from April to the end of NOV  every  year , and soon the rain stopped all the pulls ,stagnant water up dry as soon as the rain stop raining then people harvest  their grain and leave to the river side if he /she don’t have cattle  to look for water  until the end of April then he /she will back to the villages     

 

 

                           5-Household food security ( or peace economy or Livelihood  )

There is a great need  of creating peace and harmony in the three counties which fall under Cueibet Diocese,  between these different ethnics groups  fighting each other over water points , grazing lands  that cause a lots of cattle’s raiding and theft and to solve this problem it will be the church who  has gone far deep to the villages and cattle-camps  can enlighten the community when she get the facilitates and motilities of movement and support the teams.

One strategy had been repeated every now  and  then by many organization which are operating in the ground  here in Lakes state ( peace workshops , peace and reconciliation workshops , peace building workshops, conflict and resolution workshops  )  even they  has done it . But  because all these  things are still high among the community [ Poverty , diseases , hunger, ignorant , and injustice ] and the  most highest and very common  one among the community is  IGNORANT   that need to  be address through using different Educational methods  and here is applying { functional literacy  for pastoralist  } in the cattle-camp and deep villages .

To fight the hunger , there is a great need to introduce  family / household fruit garden programmee in every house to address lack of fruit in the community.

 

                      6-PEACE , JUSTICE  AND RECONCILIATION

-Created awareness of human right (advocacy ) and Dialogue on conflict and resolutions

Train women mitigaters and deploy them in the community where they staying.

Train chief, goal-leaders on how to advocate  on behalf of their people

Open mobile pastoralist classes in the cattle –camps  and deep villages  near integrated villages

 

                   7-STRENGTHEN THEOLOGICAL  EDUCATION

 -Building capacity of  pastors  and lay men in theology  in the Diocese.

Send a qualifies pastor or a lay man /women to study outside southern Sudan Kenya or Uganda

To reduce illiteracy and transform church workers to knowledgeable and skilful congregation through functional literacy programmee by using ALP Materials  from  State MOEST.

 

 

 

 

                     8-CHILD AND YOUTH

Train youth on effective leadership skill  and development

Train youth  on computer skill  and  Morden technology

Train Sunday school teachers to teach children in the parishes

 

                  9-WOMEN   EMPOWERMENT

 Equipped women in the church and  in the community with long-term empowerment tools to enable them to be self –reliant in Managing their project  and  reduce women burden and hardship in the deep Villages.

 

 

              10-ORPHANAGE AND DISABILITY

Established  orphanage centre and care for  orphans and homeless  children and  Increased an access  to improve  disable  livelihood   and   people affected by  the war

 

 

           11-SUSAINABILITY

Increased Diocesan staff capacity to generate internal revenue , local contribution and minimized external dependency . and streamline mechanism for managing internal incoming generating assets

                                     12-Donor Base

 

Strengthens Donor base capacity through Inviting Christians Volunteers  from abroad to come and work in the Diocese  for one or two to  five years training staff and connecting the Diocese with outside
